Bloodline _ The Search for Speed

Selective breeding for speed in the racehorse has resulted in an unusually high frequency of the C-variant (g.66493737C/T) at the myostatin gene (MSTN) in cohorts of the Thoroughbred horse population that are best suited to sprint racing. Here we show using a combination of molecular- and pedigree-based approaches in 593 horses from 22 Eurasian and North-American horse populations, museum specimens from 12 historically important Thoroughbred stallions (b.1764–1930), 330 elite-performing modern Thoroughbreds and 42 samples from three other equid species that the T-allele was ancestral and there was a single introduction of the C-allele at the foundation stages of the Thoroughbred from a British-native mare. Furthermore, we show that although the C-allele was rare among the celebrated racehorses of the 18th and 19th centuries, it has proliferated recently in the population via the stallion Nearctic (b.1954), the sire of the most influential stallion of modern time, Northern Dancer (b.1961).

2013 Day 2 Sale Review

IMMORTAL VERSE set a European record for a broodmare when selling for 4.7m guineas on a day of extraordinary trade at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. Additionally, ROSDHU QUEEN and DREAM PEACE sold for 2.1m guineas and 2.7m guineas respectively, pushing the turnover past 30,000,000 guineas for only the second time in European auction history. In total, 190 lots were sold for 34,478,500 guineas, at an average of 181,466 guineas and at median of 76,500 guineas resulting in rises of 45% for turnover, 40% for average and 16% for median.

For the second time in two days an expectant hush descended over Tattersalls as an in-foal mare, another dual Group 1 winner, this time the PIVOTAL mare IMMORTAL VERSE and sold in-foal to DANSILI, made her way into the sales ring. The bidding was kicked off at 2 million by James Wigan, along with Michael Goodbody and the pair took the price past yesterday’s session topping 4 million guineas, before BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicoll made the successful bid of 4.7 million with Wigan the underbidder. The price is a new European record for a broodmare sold at auction, the previous best being the sale of Magical Romance for 4.6 million guineas at Tattersalls in 2006, coincidentally purchased by Wigan at the time. IMMORTAL VERSE was purchased by Nicoll on behalf of a new partnership to be established within Coolmore and was sold by Luke Lillingston’s Mount Coote Stud on behalf of US-based owners Merriebelle Stables.

Ridden by Jose Lezcano, who replaced the injured John Velazquez, for trainer Charles LoPresti, Wise Dan paid $3.60 to win and was met with a roar of applause when he returned to the winner's circle. LEROIDESANIMAUX - US Leading Stallion to stand in Newmarket 

Lanwades Stud and HallMarc Stallions are pleased to announce the relocation of leading American sire LEROIDESANIMAUX to stand at Lanwades in 2014 and onwards.

LEROIDESANIMAUX won 9 races from 13 starts on turf and dirt in USA and Canada over distances from 6 1/2f - 1m 1/2f, incl. Gr.1 Citation Handicap, Gr.1 Atto Mile Stakes, and Gr.1 Frank E Kilroe Mile Handicap, also a further three Graded Stakes wins - and $1,658.377. He was voted the Eclipse Awards Champion Turf Male Horse in the USA in 2005.

Leader of all stallions in the USA (June 22nd 2013), LEROIDESANIMAUX headed a list comprising e.g. Malibu Moon, Speightstown, Giant's Causeway, Kitten's Joy and Medaglia d'Oro.
